Michael Bunker's "One Arm of the Octopus" isn't quite the genre I usually go in for -- it's more likely to be something science fictiony -- but the "specials" available on Amazon occasionally tempt me to try something new and different. I'm glad that was the case with this short story/novelette; it's a highly satisfying, thought-provoking read from start to finish.As you might expect from a story originally published in "Tales of Tinfoil: Stories of Paranoia and Conspiracy," this one is all about convenient accidents, shadowy figures, and Unseen Hands. It's also well-researched historical fiction, with a backdrop of well-known political figures and geopolitical fiascos that I, for one, can tell you rings true with what I remember first-hand. The writing, as you'd expect coming from Bunker, is good enough that the boundary between "historical" and "fiction" is totally seamless, making the whole account believable to the point of being eerie. Highly recommended to anyone, conspiracy theorist or not, who likes their great fiction in (comparatively) small doses.

This was such reality for me. Nobody gets why I have been upset about Arkansas all these years. Now I can tell them to read this and they'll know why. Michael has such a way with words, and this time, even though I was never south of the border at this time, it spells out what happened in general and why we should all be very aware of why one party is not better than the other in the scheme of things. Read this. It is worth every minute.
In 1985, Matthew is a freshman trying to start a new life for himself in college. There he meets Paul, someone who is slowly grooming him for recruitment into the war on drugs being waged in Nicaragua. Traveling there to ostensibly observe this war in person, he begins to get a whole new education courtesy of the Octopus, a shadow CIA organization manipulating the war for its own benefit. To watch Matthew’s seduction as he’s inexorably drawn into this conflict is a fascinating character study. The narrative deftly immerses us into it with every meticulous detail while we watch idealistic innocence disappear, saddened at what’s occurring but unable to look away. How will Matthew be affected by all of this? And what happens as this conspiracy slowly evolves into something even more sinister than before?
I loved how the author used Matthew's story as the center around which this tale takes place, giving the reader a window into what it's like to witness these events. It's a tight point of view that demonstrates strong character work as his youth becomes tarnished, slowly being affected by the stench of corruption all around him. This, combined with admirable research into the time period, makes for a satisfying and gripping tale.
I originally read this short story when it was published in Tales of Tinfoil Stories of Paranoia and Conspiracy, an anthology filled with much more excellent short stories about conspiracy and paranoia just like this one!
Disturbingly real novel demonstrating the intrusion of the government + industrial + information complex on life. Read it, and beware! Remember, the Octopus has seven more arms.
This was a remarkably compelling short story. I certainly wished it had been a novel. The novel blasts off from the very beginning and doesn't let you go until the end. The tone is delightfully paranoid, as would be appropriate, and the plot is unpredictable and enjoyable. I hope to read other stories from the world that Mr. Bunker has created here.
Don't let the cool cover fool you. There are no sea monsters here. This is a tale where fact meets fiction that will find you questioning everything. It's a wonderful thought provoking short story about a young adult finding his place in the world. A series of 'coincidences' shapes the choices he makes and puts him on a path to South America and straight into the middle of a government conspiracy.
Boy, this one had me really thinking. Read it in one night in one go, and it *still* has me thinking. That's a good thing. I won't spoil the story. Suffice to say that the poor protagonist REALLY got in over his head. I have no criticism about this book, and I *try* to to that with books I read. Especially ones I enjoy. This work is eerie, disturbing, enlightening, and stays with you. Suffice to say the title is an apt metaphor, and then some. Highly recommended, as is everything I've read of Bunker's so far. I wish his work was in hardback- I would be happy to have it on my shelf along with the rest of the favorites I return to time and time again. More people need to know about this author- he can WRITE and tell a fantastic story. Those things at times are mutually exclusive. Not here. It's an inexpensive read, and accessible to all lovers of the craft. Highly recommended- purchase it.
I was 10 years an adult at the time this story takes place, and remember these scandals well. I'm always impressed with Bunker's characters. I feel like I get to know them in person! This is a fast-paced historically accurate short story. I'll bet you a dollar you can't set it down and go to bed. You'll be up late! I let my dad read it too. He's 83. When I asked him how he liked the story, he gave Bunker the ultimate complement. He said, "I want to read more of this man's stories."
